How solar payback is calculated
We start with your net cost after incentives: the gross system price minus the federal Investment Tax Credit (30% of the gross cost through 2032 under the Inflation Reduction Act) minus any state or utility rebate. In formula terms:
net cost = gross cost × (1 − ITC%/100) − rebate
First-year savings assume net metering — every kilowatt-hour your panels produce offsets a kilowatt-hour you would have bought at the retail rate:
year-1 savings = annual production (kWh) × rate ($/kWh)
If you leave production blank we estimate it as
system size (kW) × 1,400, a national-average production factor
from NREL's PVWatts model. Simple payback is just
net cost ÷ year-1 savings.
For lifetime ROI we sum savings across every year of the
analysis period, shrinking production by your degradation rate
(1 − deg)^year while growing the retail rate by your utility
inflation rate (1 + inflation)^year. ROI is then
(lifetime savings − net cost) ÷ net cost × 100. A
discounted-payback figure re-checks that break-even after discounting each
year's savings to today's dollars at 5%.

Frequently asked questions
Is the 30% federal solar tax credit still available?
Yes. The Residential Clean Energy Credit equals 30% of your gross system cost and, under current law (2025), stays at 30% through 2032 before stepping down. It is a credit against your federal tax bill, not a rebate check.
What is a good solar payback period?
Most well-priced residential systems pay back in roughly 7–12 years, then produce largely free electricity for the rest of their 25+ year life. Lower install cost, higher electricity rates, and strong net metering all shorten payback.
How much electricity will my system produce?
A common rule of thumb is about 1,400 kWh per installed kW per year, so an 8 kW system produces roughly 11,000 kWh annually. Sunnier regions and south-facing, unshaded roofs produce more.
Does panel degradation really matter?
A little. Modern panels lose about 0.5% of output per year, so after 25 years they still generate roughly 88% of their original production. This calculator factors that decline into your lifetime ROI.
